Part-Time Barn Manager 

Join the Gateway HorseWorks’ team of horses and people at our new farm facility in Malvern,  PA! With 15 acres and 6 horses, this is an exciting opportunity for an equine professional to join  a nonprofit organization delivering cutting-edge Eagala Model equine-assisted psychotherapy in  Chester County! 

We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization located in Malvern, Pennsylvania.  We serve a wide range of  people by incorporating horses into experiential, psychotherapeutic sessions.  We facilitate all sessions in the Eagala Model®. 

Gateway HorseWorks is seeking to fill a unique, part-time Barn Manager position, with  opportunities for growth within the organization, with the following qualifications: 

Qualifications

A proven history of working with horses: 
• Ability to manage the daily care and general wellbeing of the herd including: o maintain/adjust nutrition plan for health & weight of all horses 
  •  Groom and turnout horses daily 
  • Clean stalls 
  • Night check 
• Coordination of veterinarian and farrier care: 
  • Deworm schedules, dental floats, trimming/shoeing, vaccinations, etc. o Maintain all medical records 
  • Provide emergent and non-emergent medical care when necessary
  •  Develop emergency preparedness and evacuation plans 
• Working knowledge of herd dynamics and groundwork 

Experience overseeing the maintenance and care of a farm: 
• Maintain property and equipment, including but not limited to: 
  • weed whacking and mowing grass in and around barns, paddocks, pasture, and  perimeter of property 
  • filling water tubs 
  • farm vehicles (tractor and gator) 
  • manure removal 
  • repair fencing 
• Assist with the farm’s nutrient management program and management of pastures
​• Manage inventory of bedding, hay, and feed 

• Ensure the appearance of the farm is kept clean and maintained 

Management experience: 
• Oversee the supply needs, costs, and operating budget for barn & farm • Manage part-time employees & volunteers including:

  • Manage the daily schedule of the staff including advising them as to horse needs  (turnout plans, blanketing, changes in daily routine, etc.) as well as the weekly and  monthly workflow 
  • Teach horsemanship, first aid, and safety 
• Assist in the planning and operation of several major events at the farm each year 

Necessary Skills Include

  • Due to the nature of our services, all applicants must have an ability to pass background  checks and provide county mandated clearances. 
  • The ability to complete work efficiently and timely in an organized manner • Ability to react quickly and problem solve issues, including but not limited to facility and  staff management 
  • Maintain client confidentiality 
  • High rate of task completion in both efficiency and quality 
  • Superior communication skills 
  • Ability to multitask 
Availability & Compensation: 
  • This position requires 20-30 hours per week, work on weekends, and availability for  emergency call and night check 
Compensation commensurate with experience.
