About Gateway HorseWorks
Gateway HorseWorks is a nonprofit organization dedicated to incorporating horses for the mental health treatment of people. Through innovative, evidence-based programs, we partner with licensed mental health professionals and equine specialists to serve individuals and communities facing mental health challenges. Our programs address a wide range of needs, from trauma recovery to social-emotional learning, using the unique partnership between humans and horses as a catalyst for growth and healing.
Position Summary
The Clinical Director will serve as a key member of the leadership team, overseeing all aspects of the organization’s clinical programming and ensuring the highest standards of care, compliance, and effectiveness. This is a newly created role designed to support Gateway HorseWorks’ growth and strategic vision as we expand and replicate our programs to reach more people in need.
In addition to internal clinical leadership, this role is intentionally outward-facing and will play a central role in positioning Gateway HorseWorks as a thought leader in the field of equine-assisted mental health services. The Clinical Director will contribute to the broader professional dialogue through speaking engagements, conference presentations, and published writing, helping to elevate the organization’s voice nationally as the field continues to evolve.
The Clinical Director will provide clinical supervision, ensure program fidelity to the Eagala Model, oversee quality assurance, and contribute to program development and evaluation. This position will report directly to the Executive Director and work closely with equine specialists, mental health professionals, and administrative staff to maintain program integrity while innovating to meet community needs.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Leadership & Oversight
• Provide leadership, supervision, and guidance to mental health professionals delivering services across all Gateway HorseWorks programs.
• Ensure clinical programming meets ethical, legal, and best-practice standards, including compliance with licensure requirements and relevant regulations.
• Maintain fidelity to the Eagala Model while adapting programming to meet diverse populations and needs.
• Oversee intake, assessment, treatment planning, and discharge processes.
Supervision & Professional Development
• Provide regular clinical supervision to mental health professionals and interns in accordance with licensure requirements.
• Facilitate ongoing training, case consultation, and professional development opportunities.
• Model trauma-informed, strengths-based, and culturally responsive practices.
Program Development & Evaluation
• Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop, expand, and replicate programs while maintaining quality and consistency across locations.
• Oversee program evaluation, data collection, and outcome measurement to demonstrate impact and inform continuous improvement.
• Support grant applications and funder reporting by providing clinical insights, outcomes data, and program narratives.
Thought Leadership, Community Engagement & Partnerships
• Serve as a visible ambassador for Gateway HorseWorks within the mental health and equine-assisted services fields.
• Represent the organization at local, regional, and national conferences, professional forums, and convenings.
• Present on Gateway HorseWorks’ clinical model, outcomes, and innovations through conference workshops, panels, and keynote opportunities.
• Contribute to professional publications, articles, and other thought leadership content that advances the field and elevates the organization’s profile.
• Develop and maintain relationships with referral sources, partner organizations, academic institutions, and other stakeholders.
Organizational Leadership
• Serve as a member of the leadership team, contributing to organizational strategy, policies, and culture.
• Participate in budget development related to clinical programming and growth initiatives.
• Uphold Gateway HorseWorks’ mission, values, and commitment to breaking down barriers to mental health treatment.
Qualifications
• Master’s degree or higher in Social Work, Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, or related mental health field.
• Current clinical licensure in Pennsylvania (LCSW, LPC, LMFT) with eligibility to provide supervision to licensed professionals and interns.
• Minimum 5 years post-licensure experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
• Experience with equine-assisted therapy, preferably in the Eagala Model (Eagala certification strongly preferred).
• Demonstrated experience or interest in professional speaking, presenting, training, or publishing within the mental health field.
• Proven ability to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical programs.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
• Commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and evidence-based practices.
Work Environment, Travel & Schedule
• Position is based at Gateway HorseWorks’ facility in Malvern, PA.
• This role includes frequent travel to Philadelphia, surrounding regions, and nationally as Gateway HorseWorks expands and replicates its programs.
• Travel will also include attendance and participation in regional and national conferences, trainings, and professional convenings.
• This role includes a mix of office-based administrative work, direct clinical supervision, program development, and time in the arena with horses and clients.
• Some evening and weekend hours may be required to support programming, events, and travel obligations.
